Cellule Eat Interview for The Dedicated

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Interview from July 18th, 2011

Cellule Eat is a techno, micro-funk live act trio from France and Germany. It consists of Pit Spector, Boris and Tilman the head of the German techno and house label “Klamauk“. On Saturday I was able to ask them some questions before they played one of their phenomenal live-sets. The live-set was really rich in variety and covered many different styles from jazzy and deep house to techno, minimal and microfunk.

Dispatch: When did you start making music together as “Cellule Eat“ and how do you produce? Has everybody his defined function?

Cellule Eat: I (Pit) met Boris three years ago in the zero zero bar in Paris where he was a DJ resident and then we staged many parties together. Tilman joined us after Boris met him on myspace and listened to the first Klamauk release, which he really liked. At first Boris and I produced in our flat but this was more like a ableton live jam, then we started to produce with Tilman. Because of the distance between Tilman and us we often exchange some loops and ideas over the Internet and then we finish the tracks together. But we don’t really have a determined production concept, we just make music together and our different influences and ideas form the Cellule Eat Sound. Just do it!

Dispatch: Which equipment do you use for producing and for live playing? How do you sync?

Cellule Eat: In the studio, which we share with Antislash, we use many different instruments. For example we use “real“ instruments like guitars and different percussion equipment and microphones to record our voices. Moreover we use equipment like microkorg, korg electribe, Kaos Pad,the Nano Pad controller and of course Ableton live. In live situation Boris raps/sings in a few tracks and we plan to use more live instruments in our next live set, but in clubs there is always a space-problem.

We do not sync our computers via Midi, we mix the signals of the computers via headphones and a mixer. When we play live mostly one of us plays the main track and the others add some accents and additional sounds.

Dispatch: How would you describe the sound of “Cellule Eat“ ?

Cellule Eat: That’s a difficult question but we would locate our music somewhere in between Microfunk, Minimal, Jazz-House and Techno and our live-sets are very dance-floor oriented.

Dispatch: When is the release of your next EP and how changed your sound compared to your last EP on minibar?

Cellule Eat: Our next EP will be released on the House-Label Maria Colors (Frankfurt) in September. On this EP we wanted to do some new stuff, something different with more melodies and more “real“ sounding tones and sounds. We wanted to create something apart from monotonous computer music. We also have a track on the new Klamauk release, which will be out in September too.

Dispatch: How would you describe the electronic music scene in France compared to the German scene?

Cellule Eat: In France, there are fewer producers, than in Germany. There are only little groups. We know many French producers but in Paris it is really more difficult to play and be recognized than in german cities. When you reach a label in France it feels much rougher than in Germany because the people in Germany are used to it and there exists a real electronic music culture.

Pit told me that he and Boris are going to launch a web radio Programme from September on where you can listen to them every Thursday and Friday. The address is: www.radiozerozero.com.

Klamauk hits Paris

Saturday, December 18th, 2010

Four days, three partys, two locations (Udo Bar and Zero Zero), a wonderful restless weekend in snowy Paris. Finally arrived after a long journey caused by bad weather conditions. Thank you Deutsche Bahn. First gig was at the Udo Bar. Nice bar from german emigrants with a special menu of german beer and different “bratwürste”. Especially I remember  the big wallpainting of Schloss Neuschwanstein directly behind the dj desk. It was so huge, haha. Stopped counting the vodka shots,  I was happy to have Boris and Cora with me who took care of me and got me home safely. Thx for that :-) Next day we conquered the great Zero Zero bar. Crowded as always, Boris, Pit and myself were really into playing some old detroit stuff. The tiny place was heated up, it was a great party! The owner asked us to play again the next day, which we couldnt deny. On saturday afternoon the hangover got us pretty bad, but after the sushi ( thx to the girls :-) ) we were back to life again and ready to rock Zero Zero again. The last track of the night by Krause Duo burned the crowd, what a fantastic feeling. After those great days and the friendly people I met, I didnt want to go, but for sure I’m coming back very often! Cant wait :-)

cellule eat at bastard club osnabrueck

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

it was once again awesome. pit and boris came down from paris and we drove up to osnabrueck on saturday night. except of the travelling in my old vw golf. on our way there it rained so hard, that when i drove into a big ass puddle, the water splashed on the bottom of my car and — killed the motor for at least 15 min. well we arrived, did the sound check, did a private party. whent to the club and once again osnabrueck showed itself from its chockolade side. we pardied all night and with tilman, pit and boris threwing a smooth live set, we had no hard time doing so. sunday, way back. again it rained all day. this time a flat tire on the autobahn. sucks. if that werent enough, the exchange tire was flat too. .. go figure the program. here are two cut outs of the live set. enjoy.
